Yearly gas safety inspections for commercial kitchens

Engineer carrying out a commercial gas safety inspection on catering equipment

A safe gas installation protects your staff, customers, premises and ability to trade. EMCAT provides commercial gas safety inspections for catering kitchens, covering appliances, installation pipework, flues, safety devices and, where applicable, the relationship between the gas supply, extraction system and ventilation interlocks.

Following the inspection, you receive clear written findings identifying the equipment checked, its condition and any remedial work required.

Why yearly inspections matter

UK law requires employers and self-employed operators to maintain workplace gas appliances, installation pipework and flues in a safe condition. Inspection intervals should reflect the equipment, its level of use and the manufacturer’s instructions. The Health and Safety Executive advises that, as a general rule, an annual inspection is a reasonable minimum for catering and hospitality equipment.

Regular inspection can help to:

  • Identify gas leaks, unsafe combustion and defective safety devices
  • Reduce the risk of fire and carbon-monoxide exposure
  • Confirm that appliances, flues and pipework remain safe
  • Check ventilation and gas-interlock arrangements where applicable
  • Provide written evidence of planned safety maintenance
  • Reduce unexpected failures and disruption to your kitchen

DW/172 and commercial-kitchen ventilation

Adequate extraction and replacement air are essential when operating gas-fired catering equipment. Poor ventilation can contribute to incomplete combustion and the accumulation of dangerous combustion products, including carbon monoxide.

DW/172, published by the Building Engineering Services Association, is the recognised industry specification for the design, installation and maintenance of commercial-kitchen ventilation systems. Gas safety and ventilation-interlock arrangements may also need to be considered against BS 6173:2020 and IGEM/UP/19.

DW/172 is a ventilation specification rather than a gas-safety certificate. Where appropriate, our inspection considers how the gas installation works alongside the kitchen’s extraction, replacement-air and interlock systems.

PSSR compliance for coffee machine boilers

New from EMCAT — help meeting your legal pressure-system duties

EMCAT now offers PSSR certification support for commercial coffee machine boilers. We can help dutyholders put the required Written Scheme of Examination in place and arrange examination by a competent person.

Why it matters: Before qualifying pressure equipment is used at work, HSE states that a suitable Written Scheme of Examination must be in place and an examination undertaken. Steam at any pressure is classed as a relevant fluid under PSSR.

Regulations 8 and 9 of the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 require qualifying systems to have a suitable written scheme and to be examined at the intervals specified within it.

Book a PSSR assessment or call 01246 558 523. Read the official HSE PSSR guidance and Written Scheme guidance.

Requirements depend on the equipment and any applicable exceptions. Each pressure system should be assessed individually.
